I know it can still be intimidating, but I can assure you this can be done with a lot of ease. Just follow up with me, I will show you how to do it in three simple 7 steps.
Tip: If you are a beginner you can be overwhelmed by lots of information over the internet.
For now, just stick to the information I present to you in this article because it’s enough to get you started. Then you will continue with advancements.
Be careful with too much information
Information about building a website for free can be complex and confusing mostly for the beginner this is why we are breaking it in 7 few simple steps
We will create a basic version of a website where people can find essential information about you and/or your company: the company location, its phone number, email address, and social media accounts and physical address of your company if you like.
It will also be able to display information about what your website is all about. For example, if you’re going to sell products and services online, your website will facilitate those transactions. In case it will be solely informative website then it will be even easier
There many ways to build a website for free, in this article we explore the steps involved using Wix. With Wix you don’t need to have any pre-information about coding nor does it require being a computer expert. It is free and simple
Step 1: Create an account with Wix to build a website for free.
This is common with many website builders, for someone who wants to create a website for free, the first requirement is to create an account.
Creating an account with Wix is simple and should only take you a few minutes if not seconds.
Head to wix.com and click on the “get started” in the center of the screen.
Tip: In case you’ve been doing your research and you find yourself on another Wix page, to make it easy for you such that you follow along easily, I would recommend going back to the homepage.
To go to the home page, type “wix.com”.
In some cases, even when you type in the address into URL address Wix refuses to take you to the homepage. If this happens, the easiest way is to open a new browser.
If you were using google chrome for example you might need to open Firefox or edge or any other internet browser.
In case this is uncomfortable with you to do then make sure you clean the browser by deleting cookies and logins. This can sound a more complex option than the first one.
But whatever you choose it should work with ease.
Wix website won’t ask you much information, you will only need to insert your email address and password.
signing up with your Gmail or Facebook
Moreover, Wix sometimes will also provide you with other options for signing up, they will allow you to sign up with your Facebook account or Gmail account. I think this is quicker since you don’t need to remember the login details of Wix, remembering the login details of either your Gmail or Facebook would sufficient in this case
Wix will also ask you some follow up questions to help you create a website that fits your preferences. The answers you provide help Wix’s ADI builder create a site that you like faster.
However, answering these questions is optional, therefore, you can skip them if you like
While you are figuring out the type of website you are trying to build, to cut it short you can for focus on this simple question:
Are building a free website for yourself
Is it for your client? company or what
Then you will need to find out whether your website is for business, online store, blog, portfolio, events, photography, restaurants and food accommodation, cosmetics products and so on
The above questions will help to make a correct selection of the theme to use and template
step 2: Choose how you want to build a website for free
Wix will present to you two options, you can choose to allow the Wix ADI to create a website for you. This way you will only need to answer a few questions, and depending on the answers that you provide your website will be ready just a few seconds or minutes.
You can go on and make some customization if you like. it is quick and magical. However, both options are quick, mystical and professional
On the other hand, you can choose the option “create your website with the editor”. For the reasons for experimentations and demonstration purposes we will focus more on the second option.
But before we explore the second option, if you chose the first option,
Wix will ask you to enter the name of your site. Just click to enter the name. If you are not sure what name you want, then it’s okay.
You can just either guess any name and enter it or you can skip it and enter it after.
Just make sure that you don’t waste your time on it.
Everything you do here is in a draft mode which means they are not published yet.
It’s only when you think everything is fine that you will press the publish button in the last step that your site will go online in an instant.
Just know that by now Wix is trying to present to you options easily for quick website setup. It tracks and saves all your preferences and editions.
You are supposed to enter the logo for your website because every business has a symbol remember! that’s the reason why Wix is requesting for the logo of your online business.
I know you are wondering how will you insert a logo that you don’t have. It’s fine, you have many options to choose from. If you like Wix has logo maker services on a small fee.
However, maybe you want everything completely for free.
Then it’s okay, there many websites where you can get free icons, logos, images, and so on.
Alternatively, you can go to websites with absolutely (100%) free to use images, resize them add some texts may be and use them as your logo.
Websites like Pixabay, Unsplash, Pixels among others. Moreover, you can alternatively visit canvas and create a logo for free.
Nonetheless, if you think you don’t have time and saying to yourself that “maybe I will do this at a later stage”, then it’s fine you can skip inserting the logo and continue because building website for free with Wix was meant to be flexible, quick, easy and stress-free
Next, Wix will ask you to pick a theme you like. This is different from a template. It’s more about the look and feel of your website.
Think about the type of person who’ll visit your site. Imagine what you want to come to your customers’ minds when they get to your site?
For those who chose the second option less continue with step 3
Step 3 of how to build a Website for free: Choosing a template.
Wix will present to you the already-made templates at this point for you to make choices. Alternatively, you can type in the search box in the top right side. For example, I typed in “kids store”.
You should also understand that there are hundreds of professional Wix templates available for you at no charge.
You are free to search for any template you like based on category. Some popular categories include automotive & cars, real estate, advertising & marketing, technology & apps, consulting & coaching, finance & law, pets &animals and others
These template categories are located on the left side of the dashboard. You can take some time to scroll through and find one that fits best for the type of website you want to build.
When you look at the first Wix Website template categories you might see the “Coming Soon” landing page. Even if your website isn’t built just yet, it’s important to at least start with this type of landing page.
For new companies, creating a website may be the first thing that comes to mind, before they even register their business name. Wix understands this, which is why they provide you this option.
Alternatively, you can select a blank template and build your own from scratch. While this is an option that someone can choose, I don’t recommend it more especially for the beginner.
What I recommend is that, you begin with an already made template because this will make your life much easier in the long run, especially if you’re new to Wix.
When you hover your cursor over each template, it will tell you if it’s free or not (some templates are for a fee). Once you find a template that you like, just click “edit” to continue.
Step 4 of how to build a website for free: Editing your website.
This is what your website will look like if you decide to publish it right now. It’s up to you to make the necessary changes to make the website yours.
This is what you’ll see when you’re editing the content on your chosen website:
You can change anything by just clicking on it. Start with the basics, like replacing the template company name with the name of your actual business.
Also, change the contact information
The email address, physical address, and so on.
You should personalize your site to make it look like the company you own.
You can go ahead to Pixabay get some fee images and fix them with your site
Remember that all you have to do is click on what you want to change, and follow the instructions on the screen. It’s that simple so you don’t have to worry
It’s easy to drag and resize any of the content on each page, too. The Wix Editor allows for complete customization of a webpage based on personal preferences.
Step 5 : Optimizing for mobile device
Today many people use their mobile phones to browse websites this means that you have to optimize your site for mobile devices.
The mobile version of your website should not look the same as the desktop version.
Having a good website also means that it is easily accessible from smartphones and tablets.
If you don’t have a site correctly modified for mobile devices, you could lose more than half your customers. Research shows that more than 52% of all Internet traffic comes from mobile devices.
The good news is that Wix makes it easy to optimize your web design for mobile users. Just click on the mobile icon at the top of the screen to switch between desktop view and mobile editing.
Even though Wix does a great job of automatically optimizing the site for you for mobile users, you may want to manually make some changes on your own. These changes won’t impact the desktop version of your site. However, in many cases you might not be required to make any changes for the mobile version.
Before you publish your website, you can go through the mobile version of each page to ensure that’s it’s properly optimized to your needs.
Step 6 of how to build a website for free: Connect your domain.
You’ll need to connect your website to a domain name before you can publish it and make it alive.
The simplest way to do this is to go to the dashboard and just click “Connect Domain” to proceed.
There are two options for you to choose from. You can either go by the free domain name that Wix has presented to you and you can buy a more professional domain from HostGator and connect it with Wix
The default domain for your website will look like “yourusername.wixsite.com/mysite”
The default domain name does neither look good nor is it professional but it’s free 🙂 that’s the good thing about it
You should also note that Wix gives you the option to buy a domain name directly from their platform or connect a domain name that you already own.
When you buy the domain from Wix then configuring it to match with your website becomes simpler and easier.
Wix will always give you a chance to upgrade your website if you like. Upgrading your site comes with a lot of benefits. For example, if your website is a baby clothing store, you will get the option of accepting sales and payments online. Wix will automatically transfer the money to your specified accounts
Step 7: Publishing site
You can take some few minutes to fix here and there to make sure the site looks the way you want it then press publish button on the top right corner
It’s important to note that what you before publishing your site is very subjective because it will depend on the type of template you chose.
However, the basics of editing are almost the same, you click on something you want to edit and edit it. On the left side of the editing page there is a menu you can use to browse through webpages.
Tip: In case you find the editing part confusing and complex for you, it okay you go back to step and chose the first option.
The good thing with the first option is that things are simpler with a few options during the editing stage.
To go back to step two, the best way is to go to wix.com then login to your account and chose to create a new website and continue from there.
You will also notice that when you log in to your Wix account it will present to you all the websites you have. In case you want to delete a website click on it, look for “site actions” option and choose delete
- Signup for Wix account its free
- Choose the way you want to build your website
- Choose the template you prefer
- Edit chosen template
- Optimize your website for mobile device
- Connect your website to the domain
- Publish your site
